Fans of Big Thief and The 1975, get ready to meet your new favorite band: The Nancys. Based in Gainesville, the indie rockers came together over wine nights and a love for songwriting. Their latest single, “Tell Me To Be,” has just come out on March 14, 2025, and it is a must-listen.
“Tell Me To Be” reflects on faith, identity, and coming-of-age, featuring confessional lyricism with lines like “Only nineteen / What does it mean / Isn’t it sweet to be so” and “Fantasize about broken glass / Tell me how could I feel lost / Golden cross and a silver flask.” Between gritty guitars and raw vocals, the track encapsulates what it means to feel lost and chaotic as you grow up and try to figure out who you are. The refrain “Tell me to be” is almost pleading with a higher power for answers. The religious aspect is inspired by bandmate Ella Norris’ experience growing up and grappling with religion and sexuality.
With a strength in storytelling lyricism and anthemic instrumentation, The Nancys are crafting the soundtrack to all of life’s cinematic moments. After this release, they are definitely one to watch.
