Chloe Slater’s Love Me Please EP is an indie sleaze-inspired project tackling love and life in the 21st century through the lens of a young, political, Manchester-based artist.
On the opening song, “Tiny Screens,” she takes a jab at digital fame and TikTok. It’s loud, biting, and laced with hard-hitting guitar. The following track, “Sucker,” stands out with the punchy chorus, “Won’t be a sucker for the American dream / I won’t lie to make you stay / And if I make it, then I won’t straighten my teeth / I’m gonna give it away.” Lots of older adults often tell her that her views will change, but as she asserts here, her views are not going anywhere.
“Fig Tree” sees Slater sing about choice feminism. Here, she really focuses on the societal standards about women and aging. She quips, “Why does the world want a woman to look like a kid?” Set in the current landscape of social media, television, and celebrities all selling us ‘beauty in a box,’ it’s an empowering and honest sentiment. “We’re Not The Same” and “Imposter” get more personal as Slater sings about comparing herself to those around her and living with self-doubt.
Chloe Slater is edgy, honest, and not afraid to speak on current state of the world. With gripping guitar and song lyrics that hit hard, I am confident that we’ll be hearing a lot more of her.
